Do the staff use a separate message board and if so, what host do you use?
It's 'cos I just joined a scanlation group(non-yaoi) and I'm going around hunting for a suitable but free message board. However, I'm not too sure which one would be a suitable one as errr... the subject of "scanlations" is a touchy one and I certainly don't want the board to be deleted!
Any suggestions?

No we don't have a separate message board.
Why not use Hostboard? S-C.net has used it since the beginning and we've never had major problems.

Well, it's not bad but 'cos you've to email them or something to password protect the forums, I'm a little hestitant in using Hostboard since a scanlation group is somewhat illegal after all. -__-;;

Somewhat illegal, yes. Anybody gonna do anything about it? No. As long as you don't scanlate anything that's been liscenced you're fine. I've never heard of a japanese company coming after a scanlator/fan subber group.

We are using Proboards for Red Rose yaoi/yuri group. They don't really allow you much creativity in design and sometimes go down for a short time but they are free and they seem to do the business. (we went for the unpopular black background with purple headings - but I know they allow other combinations).
at the end of the day - its the people who make up the community and not the person who host your forum.
not entirely sure how to get in touch with them as my faithful technical goddess is incharge of that (I just do reviews and talk about smut ) but I can try and find out.

It's all right. I finally created a forum at proboards and not at hostboard, reason that hosboard is getting a tad too crowded, thus affecting its' speed a little.

I havn't noticed Hostboards speed being affected.
And compared to proboards, hostboard isn't crowded at all. Proboard hosts over 130,000 message boards. Hostboard doesn't come close to that.
Proboards main advantage over hostboard is that they offer the whole subtopic thing.
